BONE GRAFTS
BONE GRAFTS
BONE GRAFT TREATMENT are bone substitutes to fill up the area adjacent to implants in case of bone loss due to trauma, infection or prolonged absence of teeth. Not every candidate requires bone grafts during implant placement.Depending upon the complexity and requirement of the case Bone grafts are used .Substitutes available range from powder, sponges, and blocks.
Do’s And DONT'S
- Swelling may persist for a few hours,no hot and cold application should be done without prior consultation of the doctor.
- Avoid smoking during the course of treatment as it may have adverse effect on the outcome of implant placement.
- Avoid alcohol ,smoking and tobacco.
- Avoid consumption of hot beverages or spicy food during the first five days.
- Consumption of easily chewable food items which are at room temperature are advised.

- Avoid strenuous workout, sports or other labour activities for first 24hrs after surgery.
- In case of any discomfort doctor should be contacted immediately.
LONG TERM CARE OF DENTAL IMPLANTS AFTER PLACEMENT
- Maintaining good oral hygiene is irrespective of implant placement.
- Brushing twice a day with the type of brushing technique and type of toothbrush suiting your dental needs as recommended by your dentist.
- Flossing as recommended by the dentist.
- Regular checkup every 3 weeks during healing period and 6 months after implant placement is advised.
IMPLANT SITE AUGMENTATION
Placement of implants which are a substitute for the natural teeth require healthy gums and healthy bone around them for better results. Less amount of gums/soft tissue around implants: Implants when placed in the mouth require a close environment for healing. In absence of such closed environment implant failure may occur. To avoid such complications soft tissue covering implant becomes of paramount importance. Sites donating the tissue become donor sites and those receiving tissue are recipient sites.Donor sites can be Adjacent area to the implant site Palatal tissue(tissue taken from patients own palate) Alloplastic membrane (artificial membrane made up of polymers) Alloderm membrane(artificial membrane made up of synthetic human material) Depending upon the requirement substitutes are chosen and procedure is planned for a healthy implant for long term success.
Less amount of bone is due to- Age(with age physiologic loss of bone occurs)
- Diseases (Such as diabetes, osteoporosis, thyroid disorders, pregnancy require careful planning)
- Prolonged period with absence of teeth(bone gets reduced in size and width when tooth does not replaced for long periods)
In such cases bone like substitutes are necessary to make up for the lost bone. These substitutes depend upon the amount of bone loss, site of bone loss, amount of teeth to be replaced.
We here at FORT DENTAL HOSPITAL aim to achieve the best site for implant placement by
BONE GRAFTS:these are bone like substitutes which help in maintaining and providing a healthy and sound base for implant placement.
Bone grafts are available in blocks, spones and powder form.
In case of large bone defects wherein the implant site is deficient in both height and width, bone from the patient’s other site can be taken .These sites are called as donor sites and the site of placement of implant or the site receiving is called as recipient site.
Donor sites can be from the other sites of the mouth, chin,or patients’ own ribs.
PERI IMPLANT MUCOSITIS
Peri implantitis mucositis is an inflammatory destructive process involving soft tissue around the implant but infection does not involve the bone. On examination at the affected site soft tissue appears swollen, inflamed and bleeding may be seen.
TREATMENT
Nonsurgical method:
Curettage of the infected site with specially designed plastic instruments. Ultrasonic cleaning of the area with special teflon coated tips for implant. Laser is used for decontamination of the site.
Air powder abrasive(mixture of sodium bicarbonate and sterile water is used)
PERI IMPLANTITIS
Peri implantitis is a destructive process involving soft and hard tissues surrounding implant.
Even the best of treatment planning and procedure fail to achieve the intended purpose. We here at FORT DENTAL HOSPITAL aim to achieve successful placement of implant with long term survival rate.
Peri implantitis involves soft tissue around the implants and also the bone. On examination the implant site appears to be inflamed, swollen ,bleeding on probing and suppuration(pus) are seen.
For correction of peri implantitis.

Site is again opened, decontamination is done with a laser. In case of bone loss Guided Bone Regeneration is performed.
Guided Bone Regeneration
Emerging trend with latest advances in the field of dentistry with most promising results.
As the name suggests, guiding the desired tissue in the place and keeping unwanted tissues at the bay with the help of a membrane.Guided bone regeneration aims at the bone which is desired in this site around implants.
A membrane is placed around implants which does not allow the growth of unwanted tissues and aims at only boe growth for which additional materials such as bone grafts are added.
